Ode to Arabic design.

Filed under: Uncategorized — blindcopy @ 11:11 pm

It’s no cliche: Arabic design is heavy on gold, embellishment, pattern, dark colours, dark wood, silk, cashmere and velvet – at least from my point of view and from my experience here in Dubai. You can get all kinds of design here and they do have all (international) brands you can think of – and the people want it and buy it. But the amount of what I consider kitsch is still high enough – so there must be a market for all that stuff 😉 But: there is hope. Apart from famous fashion designers like Elie Saab (who created Halle Berry’s memorable Oscar’s dress, which I personally didn’t like), Reem Acra (both are Lebanese by the way – please let’s not discuss whether Lebanese are Arabs) and Dubai-born Zufi Alexander, there are some jewellery designers, who might not be internationally acknowledged yet, but create the most delicate and exceptional pieces from gold, silver and diamonds…

Snake cuff by Maha Lozi.

Bracelett by Maha Lozi.

Cuffs by Ranya Sarakbi.

Leaf cuff (love this rose gold version) by Ranya Sarabki.

Another beautiful Ranya Sarabki cuff.

Boutique 1 also sell jewellery by Aurelie Bidermann, Erickson Beamon and I don’t know who, so you can compare. It’s interesting…

  2. My father used to work as in the Middle East, I remember him giving gold watches and jewelries to my mum and granny, SA is indeed full of gold… heavy gold! Fast forward, I went to Dubai (back in 2006) for a short business trip and I was still surprised to see in a certain market where they sell gold as if it is like sack of potatoes 🙂 It is indeed a lot cheaper compare to any countries I reckon…

I like the snake cuff, they do amazing design eh!

  3. Personally I prefer gold to silver when it comes to jewellery and these pieces are so beautiful – especially the leaf bracelets.
