Stiletto vs. Chunky.

Filed under: Uncategorized — blindcopy @ 7:57 pm

At the end of the day it’s a matter of taste – and comfort. Some of my friends don’t care about comfort. They would never ever wear a shoe with a chunky heel. I think even a chunky heel can look very pretty. Nevertheless I would love to wear stilettos more often, but I just can’t. You know, I started to wear high heels only a couple of years ago when I came to Dubai. I think it’s part of the rules and regulations here: Don’t kiss in public, don’t drink alcohol in public, and DO wear high heels (if you’re a woman). When I arrived in Dubai in my flats I felt like a farmer, an outlaw. Totally uncomfortable in Dubai’s “high” society. So I started practicing in 10 cm heels – the absolute max  (one more centimeter and I loose my balance). I’m glad that I did because a pretty high heel makes such a difference. It doesn’t only make your legs look longer, it also makes you feel better, sexier. And in a chunky high heel I can even survive a whole day without looking like a newborn deer trying to walk for the first time. I don’t know why I always end up wearing my Havaianas though. 😦 Are you a stiletto or a chunky heel woman?

This (above) is what I want to wear more often – no matter whether chunky or not. The following is what I do wear almost all the time…

The next model is a dream of a chunky heel – made by Chanel. Isn’t it beautiful? The picture is taken by the brilliant Tommy Ton from Jak & Jil (this image was for Style.com).

  1. i think the key to wearing really high heels all day is…well, don’t. seriously. i always have flip-flops or ballet flats on hand if i’m out in heels and doing much walking around.
i’m both a chunky heel AND stiletto girl- but lately, i’ve been leaning towards a chunkier heel.
great post! and as always, thanks for another wonderful comment on Style Odyssey! 🙂

  2. Hilarious! It must be so surreal to be in Dubai: I can’t think of any clearer definition of ‘double standard’ than how the women dress (I thought SATC2 got it spot on: that culture clash).

Stilettos or chunky? Neither, come to think of it. If anything, the 2nd. I agree with LadyOdyssey: the only way to surviving wearing high heels is to carry a big bag with a pair of flip flops & only put the heels on at the moment when you’ll be a) seen and b)sitting down.

I’ve got those same Havaiaianas (sp???) in hot pink and white. I literally found the white pair on the street, as if a girl stepped out of a taxi in them in the dead of London winter, many years ago. They are my most cherished pair of shoes.

    Great post, btw. Great blog.

  3. Oh, pretty, pretty shoes! I like both and think it’s a question of what look you want to achieve (and a question of balance) – but chunky can look elegant, too, methink. (and a pair of flats in the handbag is always a good idea 😉

  4. thank you ladies, and… well, I think you’re right: wearing high heels requires a big bag, too (for the flats). 🙂 it’s getting a bit tricky when going out at night taking just a small handbag or a clutch. … it’s such a shame that my high heels only get to see places like my office (from time to time) or maybe a restaurant. that’s why they still look brand-new :/

  5. I think both can have their place. Overall, I tend to lean towards a thinner heel, but I do have some that are a bit more substantial.

  7. i used to be able to even run in heels but that was a looooong time ago. today sadly they hurt my back but im still a stilleto kind of gal. Miu Miu has opened my heart to chunky but if im gonna f*ck my back by wearing heels, they gotta be sky high and stilletos. only like that is worth it. 😉

  8. i love both..infact more often i think stiletoes r much more lighter and comfier than chunky heels that tend to be so much more heavier on my foot… but lately im into chunky just for the sheer volume of them to balance my wide calves… lol

  9. I can’t walk in stilettos for the life of me and I actually prefer the look of a chunkier heel. Like others in the comments here, I also carry around flat shoes with me as necessary relief when my feet start to ache! Lately I have been mostly attracted to flat chunky mens shoes, brogues and loafers, which I love because they look fantastic and are also so comfortable.

  10. I had to smile – your everyday shoes look very much like mine even the thongs. I’m all for chunky heels most of the time but if the terrain is flat, I’ll go for a stiletto.
